The FDA & FSA has approved the safety of titanium dioxide for use as a colourant in food, drugs and cosmetics, however there is increasing concern and controversy surrounding the use of this product as to the safety of titanium dioxide nanoparticles used in the manufacture of food products and consumables. But what is Titanium dioxide and why are manufactures looking to move away from its use?

TD is used as a whitener and is applied to many products including food, paper, paint and plastics. The scientific community has yet to do an in depth analysis of nano-particle technology and its effects on human health, however there are already  concerns about the use of this ingredient in food products and its effects on consumer health.  Clean labelling and a drive for ‘natural’ has also dominated the food industry over the past few years, and so, manufacturers are reluctant to use ingredients that do not comply with these clean label or natural claims.

Another trend that we are seeing in the food industry is the adoption of shimmers, glitters and sparkles for food. Unfortunately most gold / glittery food dusts and shimmers contain TD, so manufacturers are struggling to source these items under the ‘Free from’ banner, which is another big trend at present. As a result, FDL have been proactive on this issue and have developed a new product called PURE SHIMMER TM.

PURE SHIMMER TM.  is a Titanium Dioxide FREE range of products which come in a range of colours and can be applied to most food products to add ‘bling’ and opulence to any product. PURE SHIMMER TM can be applied to all food and beverage products, including but not limited to, doughnuts and baked goods, beverage toppings, crumbs, sugars, sauces and inclusions, pectin gels & glazes, savoury seasonings and much more!
